Post-Election Buzz has everyone publishing their personal press releases on Facebook with emotions at an all-time high. 2016 has brought more shocking news than ever before, whether it be for better or for worse. While some mourn the results, others celebrate; regardless, we need to realize that there is a deep fear hanging over doubt and uncertainty in what the World as a whole will do next.
From conflict in the Middle East to Britain leaving the EU, the distress and skepticism that World News brings individuals hangs heavy in some hearts. Together, we need to overcome this and keep an open-mind in every situation at hand.
As an avid traveler, I can attest that there is nothing more valuable than throwing oneself into a completely new world and experiencing how other individuals live. This open-mindedness and new perspective on the world obtained by traveling keeps us connected. The media may throw over-dramatized, frightening stories and images our way, discouraging tourism and travel in certain areas.
I am not encouraging the dismissal of the media altogether but merely the notion to be more aware of what is really happening in certain areas. For example, I search for accurate Travel Alerts on the Department of Homeland Security’s website as opposed to solely conducting research via media sources.
Nonetheless, travel comes with many benefits, and you may be pleasantly surprised when you are greeted with the utmost hospitality in an otherwise media portrayed hostile environment.
One of my favorite and most over-used travel quotes is by Mark Twain which reads,
The World is a book and those who do not travel read only one page
This quote could not be more accurate today. In a world divided by conflict, uncertainty, and fear, we need to travel to experience others’ lives so we can understand and unite for a peaceful purpose. We need to create a place that will treat everyone with respect, a place where differences are celebrated and strengthened again. I do not expect everyone to agree with me but I do hope you will give this a try. This is why I believe Travel today is more important than every before.
